Forde: Players are at ease now
T&T senior women’s volleyball team captain, Renele Forde said the team is now in a much more relaxed mood mentally having received most of its funding to attend the 24-team 2018 FIVB Women’s Championship in Japan later this month.
Last week, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs kept their word and made the members of the national women’s volleyball team a happy bunch when Minister of Sports Shamfa Cudjoe presented a cheque for TT$450,000 to the T&T Volleyball Federation (TTVF) to cover the cost of the team expenses, inclusive of visas, plane tickets, and registration fees for the competition while the cost of hotel accommodation, meals and ground travel while in Japan are all taken care of by FIVB.
Speaking yesterday morning after a training session at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena, in Tacarigua, Forde, who plays professionally in Sweden, said the team was very grateful for the support of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.
“It was a nervous wait for us with regards to the funding, but the player’s minds are now at ease and we can now put much more focus on our training sessions.”
Forde added, “The mood of the players are very upbeat and training has been going very well for us, and we are now just looking ahead to our departure on September 17 for Japan where we will have a series of matches prior to the tournament.”
As part of their final preparations for the 2018 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship, T&T will be one of seven Norceca Confederation teams which will have the chance to play and train in Japan against local teams ahead of the tournament.
The T&T women who made their FIVB World Grand Prix debut last year, a tournament now replaced by the Challenge Cup and Nations League will be received by the city of Hemiji and its volleyball team Hemiji Victorina which is coached by the legendary former setter Yoshi Takeshita from September 21 to 26.
The Renele Forde-captained “Calypso Spikers”, ranked 34th in the world, will then face defending champion and world second-ranked USA, fifth-ranked Russia, South Korea (No 10), Thailand (No 16) and Azerbaijan (No 24) at the Kobe Green Arena in Pool C of the 24-team FIVB World Championship, from September 29 to October 20.
