‘Archie’ weighted to pop up, again

Decision Maker will be Robert Winston aboard the ‘top weight’ in an eleven-runner Maiden Stakes over five furlongs of Southwell fibresand today; you can bet the veteran Irishman wont be indecisive.

Given a fast break Roy Bowring- trained Decision Maker will attempt to break nine-three-yearolds ( juveniles less than three weeks ago!) because sprinting is all about power; weight isn’t a factor and yet punters are bound to be influenced by an impost of ten stones, even though weightfor- age is 17lbs!

Four weeks ago Decision Maker failed by half a length to beat 4/9 chance, Gustavo Fring, over course and distance, giving favourite- backers a real scare when heading the jolly just inside the last furlong; they finished clear of the field and, significantly, the four-year-old Ifraaj gelding achieved a ‘career-best’ time-figure.

Obviously Decision Maker will need to replicate that effort because in-form Axe Cap, carries 20lbs less in respect of WFT and a fillies’ allowance; trainer Archie Watson will be gobsmacked if this Zebedee filly doesn’t oblige having run so well over the sprint course on New Years Day.

Axe Cap was backed to favouritism but flattened and just failed to beat Gift In Time, so unlucky at Wolverhampton five days ago; the form has a solid look and Watson’s yard is firing, stable-companion, Corinthia Knight, landed our nap, Wednesday!

Experience of the ‘deep stuff’ is imperative, on the time-handicap Decision Maker is the only threat to Axe Cap and should be a backable each-way proposition; THIS is the race of the day for sprinting aficionados. It gets better!

Over the same course and distance our recent 22/1 winner, Archie Stevens, is best-in and one of nine declared for a sprint handicap, all of a sudden my speciality!

It has taken me a lifetime to realise the wisdom of computing sprinters to the exclusion of all other distances; a few weeks ago one researched/analysed them fastidiously and since we’ve unearthed a succession of goodpriced ‘beauts’ which I’m certain readers will have profited from considerably.
