Foncette: Earlier mishaps spurred me on

Sunday, October 22, 2017

National Senior Team goalkeeper Adrian Foncette is determined to take the positives from his two most recent performances for the Soca Warriors to close of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Foncette has played only nine matches for the T&T senior team and prior to his appearance in the 3-1 loss to Mexico in San Luis earlier this month, his previous showings against Haiti and Suriname in the Gold Cup qualifiers were not exactly encouraging. But he overcame that in the best possible way.

“Ever since the disappointing run in the Gold Cup qualification it’s something that has been playing over and over in my head that I let the country down and I really wanted to make amends for that,” Foncette said.

“So since then I’ve been working overtime and hoping for the opportunity to make up for it which I happened to get in these last two games. In the Mexico game this was my first World Cup qualifier also in a hostile environment with nothing to lose so I felt like this was the perfect setting to show that I’m capable of representing Trinidad and Tobago.

“In the USA game it was honestly one where I had to talk to myself over and over during the game to make sure that I stay in it and continue from my last performance because we were playing at home and this was the same venue we failed earlier on in the year against Honduras. But again we started off well and grew throughout the game and I again fed off of the energy of the team,” Foncette said.

“My goal going forward is to get better with every game I play and to get in as much games as possible as I would love the opportunity to play abroad. The competition with Jan Michael (Williams) and Marvin (Phillip) has always been good. We all have a good relationship with each other and we continually push each other in the training sessions. Everyone of us brings something a bit different to the table so I was able to learn a lot from both of them.”

Foncette, who suffered a near career ending hand injury in car accident in 2007, added that his father Glennon, teammate Sheldon Bateau and his team-mates at Police FC have all been strong supporters of his.

Paul ready to cement his spot

Former national under 20 and under 17 captain Leston Paul holds a highly honoured distinction. He remains the only T&T player to captain a national team at successive FIFA Under 17 and Under 20 World Cups in 2007 and 2009. Dwight Yorke is the only other player to captain T&T in two World Cups, first at the 1991 Under 20 World Cup in Portugal and at the senior World Cup in Germany 2006.

The Mayaro-born midfielder did himself big favours by performing strongly for Dennis Lawrence’s team in the recent qualifiers against Mexico and USA and could now be a key member of the team going forward.

“Well firstly I would say I was given the chance in the last two games to play and express myself which is what I did. The games were two finals for us as a team so personally I had the focus to do the best I that I could. I was confident coming into the games after having a good run of form with my club team in El Salvador so that trickled over into the national team games,” Paul said.

“The team had the mindset of finishing the campaign on a positive note although we knew we were already eliminated. So everyone stuck together and gave their all to achieve the results. Fortunately we did just that and now we are really eager to push on from this.” Paul said.
