A 21-year-old employee of WASA has appeared in court charged with the murder of McDonald’s restaurant manager Ashmeed Mohammed.

Israel Jabarry Durant, also known as WASA and Barry, of Chaconia Avenue, Coconut Drive, Morvant, appeared before Chief Magistrate Maria Busby-Earle-Caddle in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Durant was also slapped with charges for possession of a firearm and ammunition and robbing Mohammed’s co-worker of a $900 cellphone during the incident on May 20 at the restaurant.

Busby-Earle-Caddle advised police prosecutor Sgt Rawle Ramharrack to ensure that the homicide detective who investigated the case, provides a summary of the evidence to Durant’s defence attorney within a reasonable time.

She also suggested that the officer complete the investigative file in the case, which needs to be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) before a State attorney is assigned to prosecute.

Durant did not make any complaints over his arrest or the conditions under which he was detained before being charged.

Mohammed, 38, of Vega de Oropouche, Sangre Grande, was at the American fast food chain’s branch at Cipriani Boulevard, Port-of-Spain, when he was ambushed by three gunmen. He was shot and killed.

Durant was arrested at his workplace in St Helena last Thursday and was charged after detectives of the Region One Homicide Bureau received advice from the DPP’s Office. Durant is expected to reappear in court on August 8.
