Cops to quiz suspect in woman’s murder
Homicide investigators were expected to interrogate a 35-year-old man with a history of drug abuse last night in connection with the murder of mini-mart worker Latchmi Persad.
On Saturday, the man walked into the Couva Police Station and confessed to strangling Persad at her Ramsamooj Avenue, Chickland home in Freeport. An autopsy yesterday at the Forensic Science Centre confirmed that Persad suffered manual strangulation, which means she was choked to death by someone.
Investigators said the man has previous charges of drug possession. A search was being made for his relatives to assist in the investigation.
Police said that the man created a defence upon making the report. He told officers that on Friday night, he had been consuming cocaine and alcohol with Persad. He said they had an argument, which led to him killing Persad. He left the house shortly after. Around 2 pm Saturday, Couva detectives went to the house and found Persad’s body in a bedroom. Investigators said whether charges will be laid will be determined by the outcome of their investigation.
