Even as the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) advised residents in the southwestern peninsula to conserve their water supply, a construction crew ruptured an eight-inch main water distribution main sending hundreds of gallons of water spewing in the air.

The T&T Guardian witnessed the rupture which occurred around 11:30 am along the Southern Main Road, in Rousillac,w on Wednesday. The crew was constructing a box drain along the road and an excavator was being used to dig the drain.

However, the bucket from the excavator came into contact with the main, rupturing it.

Workers ran from the site as the water gushed forcefully, washing away gravel and silt. WASA was contacted and the leak was quickly repaired.

Along Wellington Road, in Picton near Linda’s Agro Centre, another leak spewed. WASA’s communications manager Daniel Plenty the water leak was quickly repaired.

In a statement, WASA advised that several areas in the south including La Brea and Point Fortin would have a disruption in the water supply between 9 am to 1 pm.

WASA said that maintenance works were scheduled to be done by T&T Electricity Commission (T&TEC).
