Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat yesterday declared that the best cocoa beans in the world are produced in Rio Claro and Ecclesville and he is confident they will be top contenders in the National Cocoa Awards which were officially launched yesterday.

The minister said he was happy about the opportunity the awards provide for local cocoa producers, as well as the fact that the launch did not take place in the ballroom of a hotel but at a venue close to farmers with historical significance for cocoa production, La Reunion Estate, Centeno.

“We must focus on excellence in cocoa production because that is what the world recognizes Trinidad and Tobago for,” Rambharat said.

The National Cocoa Awards is geared toward improving the quality of local cocoa beans for consumption and export, by attracting and rewarding a broad base of farmer participation.

It will also serve as preparation of entrants for T&T’s participation in the global Cocoa of Excellence Programme (CoEx) which recognises cocoa beans with exceptional and unique flavour attributes, and also serves as the entry point for cocoa producers to participate in the prestigious International Cocoa Awards, Salon du Chocolat, Paris France. The Salon du Chocolat is a celebration of the excellence of quality and diversity among cocoa producers worldwide.

The local Competition will prepare finalist samples for the 2019 showing at the International Cocoa of Excellence.

Members of the National Organising Committee are Export T&T Limited (ExporTT) and the Cocoa Research Centre of the University of the West Indies (CRC, UWI).
